Cyber Security Updates

This month we celebrate National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The year’s campaign theme of “See Yourself in Cyber” focuses on the individual. This collaborative effort is done to raise awareness between government and industry. It is overseen by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) working together.

The theme this year aligns with that of our own here at Breach Secure Now. Humans are the key element in cybersecurity. CISA simplifies this by saying that ‘while cybersecurity may seem like a complex subject, ultimately, it’s really all about people.’

Working Together

Your cyber community extends as far and wide as your cyber presence does. The invisible barriers that you want to imagine between what you do online in your private life, and what you do at work, are relatively nonexistent. If you have poor cyber habits in one area, they can greatly affect the security of other aspects. And your electronic footprint doesn’t disappear as easily as you might hope. That means that old passwords are still out there – even if the account is idle or unused. If accessed via criminal efforts on the dark web they could lead to uncovering relevant information. For example, logging in to an old account could provide access to security answer questions. Those may be the same questions that are used to access your bank account today. Or your work network.

Whatever Your Role Is

Regardless of your qualifications, you are an integral part of keeping the community safe. Enable strong passwords with multi-factor authentication is an easy first step. Educate yourself on what to look for when it comes to phishing attacks. These are one of the most prevalent methods that cybercriminals use to breach credentials. Mobile devices extend beyond the phone in your hand. Your laptops, tablets, video games, and more provide access to chats and programs that can compromise your safety.

Ongoing training is one of the best tactics to mitigate the risk in your workplace. Those habits can be applicable in all parts of your life. However, while at work, they are reinforced as well as more easily enforced.
